I'm in the same boat. I'm using a 3G with cracked screen and other issues. I originally wanted the white iPhone 4, but held out and decided to just wait until the 5. Now that the white 4 is definitely coming out and the 5 is possibly delayed I am thinking about grabbing the white 4. I will be really disappointed if the 5 ends up coming out in June/July though. It doesn't seem likely, but you never know. I figure I'll see what the latest rumors are at the time of the white launch - assuming there isn't anything pointing to a summer release of the 5, I'm just going to go for it.

Plus you can just sell the 4 on ebay or something, if the iPhone 5 comes out soon there after. It'll fetch the same price or a little less than the iPhone 5's non-contract price. So you can just buy a non-contract iPhone 5 and use that as the hardware on your current iPhone line. It's one way to get around renewing your contract for 2 more years and paying fees.

Why would anyone with half an ounce of common sense buy the 750GB HD from Apple directly for the Mac Pro for a $399 upgrade for the first one and then $599 for each additional one when you can just buy a new one (or two or three) from Fry's.com for $159 each (http://www.frys.com/product/4924331)?!

As of right now, you cannot buy one for $159 each. Read the page: it says "currently unavailable."

Who said this was a dumbed down edit suite and no longer for pros?
This looks AMAZING and solves dozens of the gripes that I deal with on a day to day basis.
Thank god that Apple aren't scared of naysayers and traditionalists like user 'Full of Win'!!!

I've been "video curious" for a long time. At $299 I think its time to bite.

Yes, Apple is a kind of Big Brother. They strictly control what people get to do with their devices. Some might call it censorship.

And what does Stewart complain about?

That they got mad at the guy who, well, paid a stranger to get his hands on their property and then even disassembled it?

Imagine losing your iPhone. The guy who finds it doesn't return it and sells it instead. And another guy takes it apart to look inside. You'd be mad, too. ;) Even if it wasn't a super secret candy pooping prototype.

But the damn site is all voluntary, no real authority.

So? Fact remains, that according to independent studies, Wikipedia is very accurate. Do you think that you can only do a good job when you are paid to do so?

People could change something on less looked at articles and nobody'd no the difference!

nobody would know the difference? Hardly

My sister's professors do not allow their students to you Wikipedia!

That's their choice. It still does not change he fact that according to independent studies, Wikipedia is very accurate. At this point I gues that you will just close your eyes, cover your ears and shout "LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!". But that does not change the FACTS.

Just because something's longer doesn't mean it's bettter!

Am I speaking latin here or something? Let me repeat what I have said: According to independent studies, Wikipedia is very accurate. Meaning: There are very few errors in the entries in Wikipedia. IN ADDITION TO THAT, Wikipedia has longer articles (on average) than Britannica (for example) does. I have NOT said "Wikipedia is better because the articles are longer". I have said that "Articles in Wikipedia are very accurate AND the are on average longer than ones in Britannica". Longer articles means that they have more information than shorter articles do.

Suppose that you were looking for information about string theory (for example). Would you prefer an article on the subject that consist of one paragraph, or one that consists of twelwe paragraphs?

If you've ever used Encyclopaedia Brittanica or the World Book, the authors are pros on the subject, not just some bum that's obcessed with Google!

What makes you think that authors in Wikipedia are "bums"? What makes you think that they are not experts in their field?

You obviously have an axe to grind when it comes to Wikipedia. I haven't seen any reason why you should call the wikipediaistas "bums". So what is your problem here?

Every single one of the many thousands of songs in my library is an Apple Lossless file ripped from a CD. Will I be out of luck? Can I store my own music? Will it support lossless? Would lossless be too big to stream smoothly anyway? Lots of questions.

here's hoping they have fixed the light leakage issue plaguing the iPads that have shipped thus far otherwise they may as well push shipping Estimates out 6 months because these things are defective

I love it when Google/Samsung/Sony/Motorola employees create new MacRumors accounts (join date Mar 2011) just to try to propagate garbage like this. Obviously trying to start a new antennagate. If you can't beat them in sales, try to start some bogus stories in the blogs and hope the media picks up on it.

THIS JUST IN: My iPad 2 is absolutely fine and its in my hands right now. Anybody else who really has one complaining?

I've written a massive list of Mac OS X 10.7 predictions, things that probably won't be included but I wish they were, and some things that will never happen (Blu-Ray and friends). Please check it out on my website- http://www.split-screen.net/features/mac-os-x-107-lion-wishful-thinking.

Please do, though. I am a human and not a robot.

    Hehe You said no MacAppStore!
    Bit of an oops there.
The one I really hope will happen is this...

Easier syncing with iPhone: in an Ars Technica article published this morning, their idea of a data conduit allowing free transfer of information between Mac and iPhone is intriguing. To take this point further, you shouldnt have to sync with a USB cable any more. The Mac will automatically load apps onto the phone by wi-fi if youre on the same network. New music will transfer from iTunes. Its seamless and hassle-free. Imagine building a playlist in iTunes and knowing its already on your phone for your trip to the gym, or downloading a TV show before a long train journey and not having to worry about plugging in your mobile device.

My big hope is Syncing system that really really works.

I could see there being an App like Game Center with elements of dropbox,(lets call it Finder just for a laugh) you have on all your devices that co-ordinates keeping files in check between all the devices you make friends with, which should be able to work background. You should be able to hook up with other users and share particular files as well. Plus cloud Storage should be able to hook in as a user.

I'd expect this to be something Developers would have to build their apps against and be expected to deal with conflicts in the data with a lot of helpful tools in the API. Of coarse it would be built in to CoreData so apps using that store would have an easy time.

Apps should be able to work so syncing is Live when corresponding apps are open on two devices and on the same network. So that an iPad app could act as a control deck to a Mac App. Like the Adobe demo of the other day.

people value what they value. do you think they are getting what they paid for in terms of education? probably not.

I have a hard time believing that even working a part-time job would pay for $70-$90/month data plan. Remember they have to pay rent, food, utilities. Or they are living with parents.

W-CDMA is just an air-interface standard. It's not a mixture of anything. It was originally designed for the Japanese FOMA system and was subsequently adopted by the 3G GSM people.

It is a CDMA air interface, but it's unrelated to IS-95, the popular US standard used by Sprint and Verizon that's frequently called "CDMA" as if the terms are interchangable. It doesn't contain any GSM, and it doesn't contain any IS-95. It is, however, like IS-95, a CDMA system, and UMTS, which uses it, is a version of GSM.

    Not exactly.

    From Wikipedia:
"More technically, W-CDMA is a wideband spread-spectrum mobile air interface that utilizes the direct sequence Code Division Multiple Access signalling method (or CDMA) to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to the older TDMA signalling method of GSM networks. W-CDMA is a competitor to CDMA2000."

And if you look at this presentation on page 9: http://www.ieee.or.com/Archive/diversity_in_3g/diversity_in_3g.pdf

you'll see that the W-CDMA standard did evolve from GSM and CDMA (IS-95).

There are a lot of other references out there too, but these are the 2 I have readily available.

My only complaint is the slowness of Outlook syncing with Exchange 2010. There's at least 20 seconds delay when getting email on my iOS device before Outlook 2011 opens it. Outlook 2010 is instant.

I am not a heavy user of Office products.

This is annoying for me as well. But I believe it's due to the way that Outlook 2011 has to connect. Outlook 2010 uses MAPI whereas Outlook 2011 uses EWS. I'm guessing EWS doesn't support push, or is limited to only checking once a minute.

Time Machine that doesn't back up a file all over again just because you moved it, or changed its name. That ends up wasting a huge amount of backup storage space for me. Retrospect was able to handle that 20 years ago.

The revenue model for iPad magazines is just not going to work right now.

First, almost without exception, it's cheaper to get a print magazine mailed to me. I think few people can stomach paying more for electronic delivery, especially when there is SO, SO much free content online. This is the major problem, and it's not likely to change anytime soon.

Second, publishers are trying to make magazines more interactive, and this is very expensive. It takes a lot of time from designers, photographers, and so on. This increases costs and reduces available content on apps like The Daily. Instead, they should focus on adding content and making it easier to find and save. For example, why not a "clippings" section where you can save and print articles you like (ads on the page, though)?

Third, ads need to become more a part of online magazines. If I'm looking for a new iPad cover, I should be able to search ads in the MacWorld magazine. Adding user reviews a la Amazon would be even better. If the publishers want to add interactive features, ads are probably the most effective way to do this.

Better value is the sum of Hardware + Operating System + Software = Performance

Paper spec used to interest me at one time too, then I grew up. ;)
Best fit depends on need, and what's available.

In terms of the hardware, Macs are using the same commodity components every other computer is built of, so there's no "special sauce" in that regard.

As per software, Apple doesn't develop that much. So most is 3rd party, and subject to the same developmental compromises that are made on any other platform (set goals on function/features and how to utilize development time that's within budget to generate them).

Depending on your needs, the OS may even be dictated by the software choices, as well as things like needing all the software to run on a single OS (i.e. VM not viable for whatever reason). For example, you want to run 3 software suites, and only one is even available under OS X. But they may have one OS in common, and booting between multiple OS's is a PITA.

So the real work is not in the writing of a book, but in the printing?
You're saying clusters are needed to write books? What are you smoking?

Books can be written on desktops, laptops, netbooks, or tablets. Smart phones too, if someone has indestructible fingers. :p

i seriously effing hope it's more than <snip> virtual desktops. that's pathetic. we need a revolutionary OS revision.Picture this - Steve Jobs is demo'ing Leopard and he pulls out a really old iMac... and says "it also works really fast on one of these"... then he reveals that it's a "virtual desktop" running remotely. You can buy a Mac Mini and have up to 2 old Macs acting as terminals (or buy an "Apple Terminal"). Then he shows the quad machine with the new Apple terminal hub, and says that a school can add this baby to their classroom and instantly have a virtual upgrade for 30 old eMacs (video editing not included - for that you need to buy Macs)

Any chance virtual desktops could refer to that? .. since that's what I want...

ps. Oh... of course, terminals aren't just for your home network, they allow remote connections and an iPad.
