Cool! The 750 GB HDD option on the iMac is pretty sweet. For a AIO like the iMac, it's nice to see Apple equipping it with options like this (and the 3 GB of RAM) which will extend its longevity.

Also, nice to see the Xserve is finally available for ordering, I know our lab guys have wanted to pick one up for the longest time.

Very wrong there and that will only cause more problems. They do have the right to confiscate it. Just give it up and get it back at the end of the day but don't bring it back again.

Schools always have police around so it could easily be taken away but why would a school have the right to take something away. I never had this problem in college but in high school they tried to take my iPhone and I wouldn't let them. I said they have no right to take it, they called the police down to the class I was in but by the time they arrived the school days just barely ended. Everything turned out ok.

I think this law is a Good Thing. It's obvious that a certain subset of Muslims are going to have to dragged into the modern age and it's gotta start somewhere.

Why should anybody be "dragged into the modern age" simply over how they dress?

    Don't you value personal freedom?

Great, just what I wanted from Outlook. Overall, this has been Microsoft's best Office for Mac suite, really no complaints.

Weird that he didn't try to shake her off. Mythbusters showed that it's impossible to hold on to a car beyond a certain turning force.

Two unathletic nerds trying to hold on to a car in motion is not proof. That was one experiment, the scientific method requires a set of experiments with different variables. Mythbusters know their experiments are not 100% fool proof and should not be taken as final.

The article said she hung on by the windshield wiper. That is impossible unless she is only 10 lbs or so. If she held on to the hood near windshield, that would be plausible. If she were 100 to 120 lbs it would make even more sense that she would be able to hold on, seeing that it is less weight to counter the force of inertia.

Jamie is what 180lbs and Adam is about 200lbs? That's a lot of weight, even Tory who is marginally more athletic than Jamie would have a hard time at his weight.

Lastly the factor is that the dude was going down the highway, there are hardly tough turns on highways.

With out reading the thread, so I'm sorry if it has been posted :o

I believe that there is no intention on iLife or iWork be released until Leopard is available. I believe that when Leopard is introduced so will the new iLife which will take advantage of Leopard's amazing new features.

I personally think you went too far Calboy by calling me and torb racist and xenophobia, after one post. You have no idea how we live life. I'm certainly not scared of other culture's, the fact I work with 85% foreign people. I'm a manager at a large 4 star hotel. Me disliking illegal immigrants (when they come legal because of "human rights") in my country is nothing to do with being racist, even if you saw it like that. We're struggling as it is here in England, yet we spend millions housing illegal immigrants, and paying for their every needs. I know I did say I wouldn't reply, but I really don't feel comfortable being accused of being a racist. Also torb is right, the EU pretty much control us now.

Now you could say, well they are legal now, so why have a problem? the problem, my taxes and what we get back from it. The government has pretty much messed up our country (Labour)

2 week bin collections, schools closing, less emergency staff on, less money for hospitals, etc (the list is really long) Yet we pay for people who illegally enter this country. You tell me if that's right or not?

But yet my friends from india and other countries who work their asses off in hotels, can only stay here for a year or 2 on a work visa, then their applications get rejected and they can't stay in the UK, why is that fair??? I've seen many GOOD friends go because the government are to stupid to sort the stupidness out.

If you are referring to refugees they total about 6000 a year, not I would have thought much of a problem for Europe's second biggest economy. The myth of spending millions on housing and "their every needs" is just that a myth,of recent migrants 60% live in private rented housing and 18% are owner occupiers.Trying to lay the blame on the people who work hard to build the country up while ignoring the tiny minority who bleed it dry doesn't seem a very enlightened view to me.You're also not the only one who pays taxes.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/jun/29/immigration-social-housing

P.S. could you provide a source for the 800000 people who are able to work but chose not to.

Has anyone tested the game on a Macbook Pro 13' Mid 2010?

I want to buy the game, but I don't know if it will work fine.

It should work, but it won't be pretty.. I have the same MBP and I'm gonna take the chance - if it doesn't work well I'll let you know :-)

I agree the 11" is one of the better small devices out there. For my needs I chose the 13" for mainly work purposes. I work on a lot of spreadsheets and powerpoints, and the 13" just made more sense. I didnt want to get an 11" and "try" it out to find out I needed more space on the screen or drive. Plus the SD card slot was a deal breaker for me as well. I recently picked my wife up another 13" even though she wanted the 11", I know in the end she would have wanted to go bigger...

With the base 11" 64GB SSD I do miss the SD card slot. That would be a great addition. The 11" is just the perfect size for business travel. I work on huge spreadsheets and just deal with scrolling until I can get to my iMac in one of my offices. Dropbox and the MBA 11" make perfect companions.

    Cheers,

Nope, the app has to be specifically multi-threaded to see more than 1 core, it doesn't matter what OS X does. All OS X does is allow apps to do this and sends different threads to different cores. But if the app can't see more than 1 core all its data will only go to 1 core.

Your obviously just assuming that or were given false info. Every dual core/cpu Mac I have ever run 10.4+ on pretty much forces multithreading in everything. I have even done extensive testing on this when I had 2 MDD's and used chud to disable one CPU or the L3 to help see the true gains and losses with and without certain hardware active. Regardless of how any of the apps were written they all performed at least 40% faster with the 2nd CPU.

Also, far too many people use the x86 frame of mind when thinking about bus and RAM speed on PowerPC Macs and make blind assumptions that it will be a heavy burden on things. PowerPC is a totally different architecture and is not near as reliant on bus speed as the x86 world. x86 architectures have as many as 14-20 steps in a process pipeline vs. 7 on G4 arch. When each instruction has to be bounced around the board up to 20 times you need a screaming bus. When it only bounces around 7 times you can get by with a much slower bus. Very simple.

I guess you got all this multithread misinformation from running single CPU iMac G3's and your single QS huh? :)

It's a little comical that a guy that need so much help with something like picking a G5 and how reliable they are is somehow expert enough about multithreading to just flat out say info is wrong. You obviously don't even understand the basics of the very architecture you're using in the first place so how can you possibly claim knowledge about something that goes much deeper?

It might be interesting to see if games for phones become a profitable revenue stream for game developers since they can skip several of the middle men via downloading games, instead of through traditional retail.

I think that was shown to be the case a long time ago.

I'd be all for something like this. Normal 3D displays are useless to me, I have an eye condition that doesn't allow me to see 3D. So I should at least have SOME 3D fun.

I'll second that. I am also what they now call as having "3D Blindness" where I cannot see 3D effect with glasses. This may prove to be the better way to provide 3D effect where "everyone" can experience it. Current 3D tech using glasses leaves out a good percentage of the population. Plus, no need for glasses is an advantage in itself.

In OSX, there's no way to disable the paging file (virtual memory). This is a real problem is if you have an SSD, because half the memory is allocated on the hard drive.

It should be an option, definitely.

But, if you check Activity Monitor, System Memory tab, you can see how much has actually been swapped out. On my system, which has been up almost 3 days, it says 80KB. Even though it says I have 4MB of swap file 'in use,' and have 478MB of swap-ins. The discrepancy is likely partially due to executable code, which doesn't get swapped; it just gets thrown out, and reloaded from the executable file if needed. My actual swapfile is 64MB as allocated on disk.

So, if you do have enough RAM, OS X doesn't appear to be over-eager in writing to the swapfile to an extent that an SSD would have any reduced lifetime. But there is probably plenty of other places to look, such as temporary files, needless rewriting of large sections of data, web browser caches, etc.
