After getting the beta to work after several attempts, I'm getting around 650 PPD on my first unit on a 2.0GHZ MBP Core Duo. I would love to install this on my friends Mac Pro!

Is there a way to limit the CPU usage with the SMP beta, I want to find some balance of CPU usage that allows me to run the fans at around 2500-3000 RPM, they are at 4000 now at full capacity, but I don't want my fans to break AGAIN (I'm 1 for 3 on apple laptops that have fans work for more than a year without making noises that sound like they came from hell)

Ok thanks for the info guys. I guess the main thing to take away from your info is that hyperthreading would do relatively little for me. This leaves the slightly faster clockspeed (and therefore slightly higher turboboost max) as the deciding factor for the i7.

I think I'm gonna go with the 3.1 i5, which should be a huge improvement for me seeing as i'm coming from a 2008 macbook with 2GHz C2D en 2GB of ram :P

Panther doesn't claim to support any
G3 without built in usb ports. That means the beige boxes and the first G3 laptops are out of luck.

Would Apple purposely exclude these machines even though the ability is there in both the machines and the OS?

I remember using OS X for the first time when I was probably 14 and I couldn't stand it. It wasn't that I didn't like it but everything seemed so much different on OS 9. However I love OS X now. I wouldn't trade it for anything.


i can exactly identify with that. when i first got my ibook, i only used 9. once i realized my folly, i tried to boot into X and found that my system folders were screwy, so i just had to get jaguar, then panther, and now tiger:D

I lined up for the iPhone 3G last year! And I lined up with my girlfriend for the Palm Pre last weekend (http://www.crazyhawt.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-waiting-in-line-first-impressions/). This year, i'm doing this by mail :). My 3GS should arrive on the 19th.

gnasher729 gave a great idea that would give you a command you could copy and paste to the terminal to see what's going on. I'll give an additional hint:
the & means something special to the shell. It means "run that command i just gave you in the background". You can quote parameters that might contain such a character, or escape it with \.

It may be a lack of scope or focus. For example, I almost started a "using Gmail with Mail.app" article, but, you know, Google maintains such an article. Why not link to that? There are several other guides out on the net from various sources. Do we re-author them?

Even if you look at some donation programs run by major business, 3% is still quite low. Some of them are so poorly run that they may only have 3% getting to the people that need it.
If you donate directly to the organizations involved (Red Cross etc) I can't imagine they'll be taking a cut...can they??
